Breakfast Session

Jermaine performed his usual kitchen miracles, presenting a sumptuous banquet for breakfast. As I tucked into my smoked salmon and poached eggs on warm sourdough toast with griddled, bacon-wrapped asparagus, I thought some more about what might motivate a person to damage the ship. None of the damage was lasting. If we all ignored the torched cabin, which could be fixed in time, all the measures the saboteur took were fixed within hours or days. The impact was on the passengers more than anyone else, their vacations affected negatively. Why though? Did I focus on that? Or on Commander Yusef’s murder? My gut feeling was that they were not connected. Someone, a member of the crew, I felt certain, got into his cabin, and stabbed him in the chest. Sabotage and murder – were they connected. And where was Molly? There was no sign that she had been taken forcefully, and our frantic searching for her overnight had proven pointless because she returned of her own volition. However, she then vanished again.

One crime or three, the question echoed in my head. Further muddying the water was the missing captain’s uniform. Was that just a random red herring and it wasn’t missing at all? Commander Yusef’s hat and shoes were taken though. Together with the clothing items taken from the dry cleaners, the thief had a complete outfit – a captain’s uniform. But only if the thief and the killer were the same person. Or did someone steal Commanders Yusef’s shoes and hat in a separate incident to his murder that was only brought to light by his death? The dots would not connect, and it felt like my head was spinning

A knock at the door interrupted my thoughts, making me realise the latest forkful of food had been halfway to my mouth for more than a minute. I looked across the suite to see Jermaine announcing Lieutenants Baker, Bhukari, Schneider, and Pippin. The hour’s grace since I last saw them on the bridge had allowed me to get a shower and freshen myself. I was dressed, my breakfast was almost eaten, and I felt ready for the day. Now I had to hope they had something useful for me.

Just as the door was closing, a hand snuck through it, surprising Jermaine. It wasn’t an intruder though, and it wasn’t Molly returning, it was Sam Chalk responding to a text I sent him an hour ago. He ought to be asleep still, but I knew jet lag would have woken him early if the excitement of being somewhere new didn’t. Either way, he was here, and introductions were required. ‘Everyone, I would like you to meet, Sam Chalk. Sam is my assistant back home in England and quite the detective.’

‘I have a magnifying glass,’ he announced gleefully, pulling it from his jacket pocket. He met Baker, Schneider, Pippin, and Bhukari as they set out paperwork and two laptops on the breakfast bar.

With that task complete, I moved swiftly on to the next one.
